USA - 101.
South Sudan - 100.
I have no intention of disrespecting South Sudan. They have demonstrated themselves as formidable competitors on the global platform in recent times. Carlik Jones was named the MVP of the 2023 NBA G League season, Marial Shayok is presently playing with the Maine Celtics, Wenyen Gabriel has gained significant NBA experience, and a number of their other players are participating in competitions in Australia.
But this USA team is STACKED.
Steph Curry.
LeBron James.
Joel Embiid.
Anthony Edwards.
Anthony Davis.
"What could have happened for such a star-studded team to win by only 1 point?"
South Sudan could have - should have won that. A bit calmer with the buzzer beat shot. I think they would have.
So, what happened?
Watch how the off-ball USA players are not moving. They are waiting for the on-ball player to trigger a movement. But, the on-ball player is looking to shoot and so not triggering a teammate to move. So all the teammates stand still, so the on-ball player has to try to score. So the defense double teams the on-ball player.
It is good to know that a team comprised of exceptional individual players engaging in 1v1 will not win the Olympics. Can the USA coordinate and synchronize movement? They have the capability to do so. If they do, the gold medal will be theirs. The question remains – will they?
